Clear cut limits increased (8/01)

NDP Leader Howard Hampton says the province is not adhering to its own forest management practices by allowing clear cutting beyond the prescribed limits.

NDP Leader Howard Hampton says the province is not adhering to its own forest management practices by allowing clear cutting beyond the prescribed limits.

Hampton says the Ministry of Natural Resources has approved clear cuts in Northern Ontario of up to 10,000 hectares, about 38 times larger than the 260-hectare limit. A ministry spokesperson says some areas are surpassing the limit, but they will be clear cut over a period of years, not all at once.
