Tembec is cutting back production at its Kapuskasing sawmill, newsprint and forestry operations and will temporarily lay off 510 employees.
A March 23 company release states workers will be out a minimum of four weeks starting April 9 with 20,000 tonnes of newsprint and 8 million board feet of timber removed from production.
The company blames ongoing challenging market conditions for newsprint and lumber.
In a statement, Terry Skiffington, Tembec's vice-president of its paper group, said despite best efforts by employees in productivity and "positive actions" taken by the provincial government to reduce the price of electricity, "the current and unforeseen market conditions are such that this curtailment is unavoidable."
Tembec indicates it will continue monitoring market conditions and "will govern operating rates accordingly."
