The woodlands division of Resolute Forest Products in Thunder Bay achieved a safety milestone in working 250,000 hours without a recordable injury among its 120 employees.

In recognition of the achievement, Resolute presented the operation with a board of directors award, which comes with a $5,000 cheque for the employees’ charity of choice. The employees are supporting the Northern Cancer Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.

Richard Garneau, company president and CEO, presented the cheque to Glenn Craig, president and CEO of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.

“We are very proud of our employees in achieving this significant safety milestone,” said Garneau in an April 25 statement. “At Resolute Forest Products, we always put the safety of our people first and we believe that creating an injury-free workplace is everyone’s business.”

“On behalf of the Health Sciences Foundation, I’d like to congratulate the employees of the Thunder Bay Woodlands operation on their safety record and thank them for choosing to celebrate this achievement with a donation to the Northern Cancer Fund,” said Craig. “Support from our community means that we are able to provide life-saving, close-to-home cancer care for our families and friends. We couldn’t do it without you and I am honoured to accept this donation.”

In the meantime, Resolute is shutting down its Thunder Bay newsprint mill for two weeks. The company blames high operating costs and market conditions for the shutdown which impacts 100 employees.
