The Temagami Forest Management Corp. (TFMC) is seeking a general manager to oversee operations in the Temagami Forest.

Hiring a manager is the next step in moving operations forward after the group received its sustainable forest licence (SFL) in April.

Located in northeastern Ontario, the Temagami Forest encompasses 634,000 hectares, bordered by North Bay and Temiskaming Shores. The organized municipalities of Temiskaming Shores (Dymond, New Liskeard and Haileybury), Cobalt, Temagami, Latchford, Harris, Hudson and Coleman are located within the forest.

The general manager will be tasked with starting up the agency and growing the organization to become “a premier example of cooperative community forestry in Ontario,” according to the TFMC.

“If you are looking for a challenging opportunity to use your expertise in economic development, forest management, and timber sales as well as your leadership skills, consider joining the TFMC as its inaugural executive,” the job ad reads.

Among their duties, the manager will oversee economic development, forest management and timber sales duties, and liaise between key stakeholders.

Roughly 94 per cent of the Temagami Forest is comprised of Crown land, but only two thirds can be harvested. The rest is off limits, protected as part of provincial parks, conservation reserves, and other “no forestry” land uses.

The Temagami Forest Management Corporation is the second organization of its kind to be established by the province.

The province has said creating the corporation falls in line with its Sustainable Growth: Ontario’s Forest Sector Strategy — a 10-year plan to create jobs and encourage economic growth through greater local and Indigenous community involvement in forestry — which was launched in 2020.

The deadline to apply for the full-time general manager position is July 21, 2022.
