Incident at Resolute sawmill results in fatality

THUNDER BAY — An external contractor at the Resolute Forest Products sawmill on in Thunder Bay has died as the result of an incident that occurred on Jan. 24.

Louis Bouchard, the company's vice-president of public affairs, confirmed the death on Jan. 25.

“The precise circumstances leading to the incident are currently under investigation. Resolute is fully supporting its contractor and the relevant authorities in their investigation,” Bouchard said in a brief statement issued via email.

Bouchard said out of respect for the deceased’s family and loved ones, the company will not be commenting further on the situation.

“Support measures have been deployed for people affected by this event in order to help them in this difficult period,” Bouchard said. “All our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones.”

The Ministry of Labour has been called in to investigate the incident.
