Nearly two years after shutting down the operation, Resolute Forest Products has restarted its sawmill at Ignace.

Initially, the mill will run one shift and provide work for 25 employees.

The company says it expects to ramp up production in the coming months, however, creating dozens of additional jobs.

The mill was idled in early 2019, partly because of a downturn in the North American lumber market.

A spokesperson says market conditions have improved, as has access to a reliable wood supply.

Two drying kilns at Ignace remain down, so lumber will be sent to Resolute's Sapawe mill near Atikokan for drying and processing through that facility's planer.
