A July 4 fire caused damage to Eacom’s Timmins sawmill.

Firefighters responded to a call about a blaze at the property just before 2 p.m. on Friday. An assessment of damage from the fire, which sent up a black plume of smoke visible from several points in the city, is currently underway.

The fire is a setback for the company, which had recently rebuilt the mill after another fire, which occurred in January, 2012, destroyed a portion of the dome housing some of its equipment, causing $20 million in damage. Eacom had spent $30 million rebuilding the facility over the past two years.

The mill, one of only two still operating in Timmins, was ramping back up to full production and had recalled employees that had been laid off during the rebuild.

The sawmill employs a total of 300 people, including 120 at the facility and the remainder in in the field, cutting, planting and doing site prep.
