Sudbury will welcome delegates from across the North in May for the 2024 conference of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities.

Sudbury will play host to the 2024 conference of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) in May.

The event is scheduled to take place May 6-8 at the Holiday Inn in Sudbury's south end.

It's expected more than 250 delegates from across the North will attend, including municipal politicians, senior municipal leaders, provincial ministers, and government staff.

Along with presentations and workshops, the event will feature a tradeshow showcasing vendors, suppliers and professionals from Northern Ontario.

Details on the full schedule will be forthcoming; however, Alan Carter, the longtime anchor for Global Toronto's flagship newscast, has been announced as the keynote speaker for the opening day.

Carter, who has anchored the newcast since 2015, has more than 30 years in the news business, including early stints as a crime reporter, a Queen's Park bureau chief, and as the host of the weekly public affairs show, Focus Ontario.

Described as the “voice of the North,” FONOM advocates on behalf of 110 cities, towns, and municipalities from the districts of Algoma, Cochrane, Manitoulin, Nipissing, Parry Sound, Sudbury and Timiskaming.

Its stated mission is to improve the economic and social quality of life for northerners and ensure the future of its youth.
