THUNDER BAY — There are hundreds of great jobs out there just waiting to be filled in Thunder Bay and beyond.

Being able to connect with enough of the right type of employees is the major stumbling block these days and that’s precisely the aim of the Opportunities Northwest Job Fair, slated to run Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Valhalla Inn in Thunder Bay.

Consultant Nancy Milani, who is helping organize the event, said they’ll have representatives from just about every imaginable industry in Northwestern Ontario, from mining and health care to construction, eager employers looking to fill plenty of good-paying vacancies.

The needs are almost endless and it’s a great chance for potential employees, whether looking to enter the workforce or seeking better career opportunities, to connect in person with those doing the hiring — a rarity in the era of COVID-19.

“There will be more than 50 different exhibitors on board. We have a wide variety of different types of sectors. There’s a number of mining companies. There’s health-care services, telecommunications, construction. There’s just about something for everybody,” Milani said.

More than 350 people have already signed up for the job fair, which is free for the public to attend and will also include an opportunity for some to meet with a career councillor to have their resume critiqued, as well as to listen to brief presentations throughout the day from company representatives who will detail a bit about their organizations the types of jobs available.

Staged by Dougall Media, the parent company of TBnewswatch, Milani said the job fair is a much needed opportunity for both sides of the employment coin.

“It was identified that there was a huge need for all the different sectors, especially in this region. A lot of businesses aren’t able to open at full capacity because there is such a shortage of workers,” Milani said. “It was just felt it was a good time and the response has been incredible.

“It’s overwhelming to have more than 50 businesses, and many coming in from the region. This will give opportunities for people here locally, but it will also give opportunities to people in the region. A lot of these are larger companies, if people do want to take the opportunity and move elsewhere.”

Milani said there’s never been a better time to seek out a long-term, well-paying career-type job, and it’s those type of companies that were sought out to bring on board for the job fair.

“There will be a real variety and lots of opportunity. And this isn’t just for people who are not necessarily currently working; it’s also for those who are maybe looking to upgrade or for new opportunities.”
