Northern designs lauded for wood use

Ontario Wood WORKS! hosted annual awards gala Nov. 20

Northern Ontario buildings, designers and wood advocates were among those recognized by Ontario Wood WORKS! during its annual awards gala on Nov. 20.

The program honours people and organizations that, through design excellence, advocacy and innovation, are advancing the use of wood in all types of construction.

Among the 13 award winners were:

  • Northern Ontario Excellence Award: North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit (North Bay); architect: Mitchell Jensen Architects Inc. Structural engineer: Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd.;
  • Residential Wood Design Award: Clear Water Retreat (Lake of the Woods); architect: Secter Architecture + Design;
  • Institutional Wood Design Award (value less than $15 million): Indigenous Sharing and Learning Centre, Laurentian University (Sudbury); architect: Diamond Schmitt Architects. Structural engineer: Blackwell; and
  • Wood Champion Awards: Kenora Mayor David Canfield and Kapuskasing Mayor Alan Spacek.

Wood WORKS! is a national, industry-led initiative of the Canadian Wood Council that promotes and supports the use of wood in all types of construction.
