PBK Architects, a firm with locations in Timmins, Sudbury and Thunder Bay, has merged with five other companies into Architecture49.

The new, national firm amalgamates PBK, Arcop (Montreal and Toronto), AE Consultants (Newfoundland and Labrador), North46 (Prince Edward Island), Smith Carter (Winnipeg and Ottawa), and WHW Architects (Halifax).

“We’re excited to bring greater depth and breadth to our regional and national clients as we help them create inspiring spaces that elevate the health, social vitality and sustainability of their communities,” Sudbury partner Roch Belair said in a news release.

“Recognizing that market conditions are right for us to mobilize together for future opportunities and position ourselves in a nationally competitive marketplace, we’ve organized our national sectors in the six key areas for which our collective firms have become known.”

Those sectors include sports and entertainment, health care, science and technology, hospitality, security and defence, and transportation.

According to the release, Architecture 49 places priority on community impact projects that have been the foundation of the regional legacy firms. An example of this is PBK’s architectural leadership in education, community and First Nations, and industrial projects in Northern and Eastern Ontario; sports, entertainment and transportation in the greater Toronto area; and the retail and commercial sector in Ottawa.
