Four-laning work continues this spring with Pioneer Construction of Sudbury being awarded a $16.8 million paving contract for 11 kilometres of work on Highway 69, south of Sudbury.
The road stretches from Trout Lake Road near Estaire to Highway 537. Work begins in April. The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines reports drivers should be able to travel on a new 20-kilometre stretch from Sudbury to Estaire beginning this fall. The project involves excavating more than 60,000 cubic metres of earth, 4,000 cubic metres of rock, and the placement of more than 89,000 tonnes of asphalt.
On Highway 11, Carillion Canada of Toronto is building 10 kilometres of four-lane highway between Burk's Falls and Sundridge. The $69.3 million contract calls for a new highway to connect to the South River/Sundridge by-pass section currently under construction to the north. Of the 41 kilometres of remaining two-lane highway on Highway 11 between North Bay and Huntsville, 36 kilometres are under construction. Engineering and property acquisition are underway for the final five kilometres at the Burk's Falls bypass.
