Xstrata stops Sudbury mine production over safety concerns

A rash of injuries at two mines in Sudbury forced Xstrata management to temporarily stop operations and send its 300-employee workforce home, Nov. 21.

A rash of injuries at two mines in Sudbury forced Xstrata management to temporarily stop operations and send its 300-employee workforce home, Nov. 21.

Vice-President of Sudbury operations, Marc Boissonneault, told Northern Life newspaper that the decision was “abrupt” but necessary to curb an increasing injury rate at both the Nickel Rim and Fraser mines.

Boissonneault said the injuries were not severe, but it was a trend that was going in the wrong direction.

“In this industry, it's our view that if there is an increasing number of less severe incidents and injuries, it will eventually lead to more severe incidents,” he said.

Once safety issues are ironed out, employees were expected to be back on the job by week's end.
