Laurentian University in Sudbury is the recipient of a $1-million investment from Xstrata Nickel, an endowment that will go towards the creation of the Indigenous Sharing and Learning Centre.

The centre, which has been designed in consultation with Aboriginal leaders, will serve as a research hub and resource centre for students, staff, faculty and the community. The project is part of Laurentian's The Next 50 Campaign—which aims to raise $50 million in new investments.

“As a company that engages with Aboriginal communities, Xstrata Nickel is proud to support Laurentian University's Indigenous students,” Marc Boissonneault, vice-president of Xstrata Nickel's Sudbury operations, said in a news release. “This $1 million donation will help provide young Indigenous men and women with increased access to the tools and services needed to reach their academic goals, and I applaud Laurentian for its efforts to make this vision a reality.”

Laurentian president Dominic Giroux said more than 700 Indigenous students attend the university, noting that the Indigenous Sharing and Learning Centre would work to serve them and future students.

“Xstrata Nickel's commitment to First Nations students is truly inspiring, and we appreciate Xstrata's decision to make this further investment in Laurentian University,” he said.
