Xstrata Nickel cancels Nickel Rim grand opening over protests

Protests planned for the grand opening of Xstrata's Nickel Rim South project in Sudbury on March 4 has led to the cancellation of the event.

Protests planned for the grand opening of Xstrata's Nickel Rim South project in Sudbury on March 4 has led to the cancellation of the event.

Members of Timmins' Canadian Auto Workers Local 599 had planned to travel to Sudbury for rallies and protests.  In December company employees were informed of  plans to close Xstrata Copper's Kidd Creek Metallurgical Site in May, affecting 670 jobs.

The event was to be attended by Xstrata's highest-ranking officials, including CEO Mick Davis, CFO Trevor Reid, as well as Thref Moraitis, executive general manager.  Xstrata Nickel CEO Ian Pearce was also to attend.

"We are disappointed the inauguration event to celebrate Nickel Rim South will not proceed due to proposed disruptions," said Marc Boissonneault, vice-president of Sudbury operations, in a release.
