Water power firm Xeneca Power Development Inc. has been brought on as a partner with EarthCare Sudbury to help the city become more sustainable.

EarthCare Sudbury partners with organizations, businesses and individuals to work together to become a greener and more sustainable community.

“EarthCare Sudbury is pleased to welcome our newest partner, Xeneca Power Development,” EarthCare co-ordinator said in a news release. “Increasing the supply of energy generated from renewable sources is an important objective of the EarthCare Sudbury Action Plan.”

In April 2010, Canadian-owned Xeneca was approved for 19 hydroelectric projects across the province, including four on the Vermilion River. EarthCare indicated that the Xeneca projects are a good fit because they rely on water, are a renewable and sustainable resource and will provide economic benefits to Sudbury, while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

“Xeneca takes great pride in its contributions to further developing this clean, renewable and reliable source of power in Northern Ontario,” company president Patrick Gillette said in the release. “We look forward to working with our partners on EarthCare's action plan.”
