With the announcement of 650 jobs to be lost in Timmins with the May 2010 closure of the Kidd Metallurgical Site, the members of CAW Local 599 are seeking community and government support to keep the facility open.

In a statement on the union's website, Local 599 president Dennis Couvrette states he's working with all three levels of government, seeking to challenge the province to "make them take a stand to defend our local natural resources."

The union is also circulating a petition promising its undersigned will "do whatever is necessary" to keep it operational, making reference to its plan to hold Ontario accountable for any lack of action.

"If the government of Newfoundland can stand up to multi-national corporations like AbitibiBowater and Vale Inco to protect their natural resource heritage then surely the McGuinty government can do the same for Northern Ontario," says the document.
