The Toronto launch of the new made-in-Thunder Bay subway cars was meet with a cheer from the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW).

CAW Local 1075 president Paul Pugh said the $710-million purchase by the Toronto Transit Commisson secures jobs for CAW members and Bombardier for the next 25 years.

“This will be the first time the (Thunder Bay) plant will be running at capacity for more than a decade,” said Pugh in an Oct. 25 statement.

The City of Toronto sole-sourced the subway cars from Bombardier in 2006 as a way of keeping the company's plant open in Thunder Bay.

The new cars were unveiled Oct. 14 at the Downsview Station in Toronto. An expected 234 cars will be delivered over the next two years and will begin running early next year on the Yonge line.
