FedNor Minister Tony Clement continues to roll out federal funds across Northern Ontario.

This week, the Township of Matachewan received $25,476 to do a community and economic development strategic plan.

“Thanks to FedNor and the Government of Canada, we will have a development road map and action plan that will help us achieve our economic and community development goals,” said Beverley Hine, reeve of Matachewan in a statement. “More importantly, diversifying our economy will help our community to mitigate the boom and bust cycles associated with the mining industry.”

Matachewan is the home of AuRico Gold's newly commissioned Young-Davidson mine.

The City of Thunder Bay will receive $250,000 to improve transit stops and shelters. “Bus stops and shelters play a key role in our municipal transit system that provides more than 3.6 million trips annually,” said Thunder Bay Mayor Keith Hobbs.

The Elk Lake Eco Resources Centre gets $8,657 to replace windows and doors, plus an additional $6,748 for improvements to its tent and trailer park.

“The community centre is the heart of our town and a key asset,” said Reeve Terry Fiset of the Township of James. “This investment...will help ensure that the facility continues to meet the current and future needs of our residents.”
