DST Consulting Engineers of Thunder Bay have won a second consecutive provincial award of excellence.
At a recent event in London, the company won the 2011 award from the Consulting Engineers of Ontario (CEO) given to firms demonstrating outstanding leadership and excellence in the field through innovative projects.
DST won the award in 2010.
The award was based on DST's use of slope stabilization project at the Garden River First Nation, east of Sault Ste. Marie.
The company successfully stabilized a 500-metre section of roadway that was experiencing ongoing land sliding and cracking by “nailing it together” using DST's patented Soil Nail and Root Technology.
It involves installing thousands of steel bars into the bank to bind the soil together and anchor the slope in place. The bank can be stabilized without disturbing the natural vegetation or aquatic life.
DST's project beat out 28 other submissions from firms across Ontario.
“Our ability as outstanding innovative leaders in our field have earned us recognition,” said DST founder Mike Fabius. “We are absolutely thrilled to be recognized by the CEO out of so many other inspiring award nominees.”
