Xstrata Nickel in Sudbury and Mine Mill Local 598/CAW reached a tentative deal for a new collective agreement, Feb. 1.

Although union's agreement expired at midnight Jan. 31, negotiators from both sides stayed at the bargaining table past the strike deadline.

Local 598 president Richard Paquin said no details of the tentative deal will be released until ratification meetings take place, Feb. 1.

The deal comes amidst a proposed $33-billion (U.S.) takeover of Xstrata PLC by commodities trader, Glencore International PLC which has been plagued by problems with various global regulatory authorities.
