Sudbury is home to a new aviation academy, which will offer ground and flight training to fixed-wing students.

Discovery Aviation Academy, which is run by Hicks & Lawrence Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Discovery Air Inc., opened its doors on Sept. 1 from its facility at the Greater Sudbury Airport.

The facility is comprised of office and classroom space, along with a 13,000-square-foot hangar floor.

“There is currently a significant gap that exists between aviation schools and operators,” said Jason Fogg, program manager, in a news release. “DAA will leverage Discovery Air's extensive network to help give its students exposure to real-world aviation and bridge the gap between graduation and employment.”

Discovery Air Inc. was founded in 2004 and offers specialty aviation services across Canada, with more than 130 aircraft in service and employing more than 600 flight crew, maintenance workers and support staff.

Hicks & Lawrence Ltd. supplies airborne fire management services to the Ontario government, along with charter service to government agencies and corporate customers.
