Twelve students from the Sudbury area have been accepted into the Summer Company Program, which provides $3,000 in startup money to run their own business throughout the summer.
Through the provincial program, the students receive training and are matched with a mentor to help provide guidance and structure throughout the summer.
The businesses include Maria Kristina, run by Kristina Galipeau, who will create her own clothing line and free tailoring; Cell Lite, run by Eric Kormos, who will help renegotiate cell phone contracts with large service providers to ensure the best program for clients; and Shawana Designs, operated by Alycia Shawana, who makes handmade Native arts and crafts in Wikwemikong, including beaded barrettes, lighter cases, keychains, dreamcatchers and jewellery.
Anthony Davis will help new and existing businesses develop business plans through Startup Strategies, Shahrukh Butt offers website development through Datatech Information Systems, while Jackson Pickard provides photography services for special occasions.
Kamin Artistry will create and sell hand-dyed, painted and silk-screened T-shirts featuring designs by artist Kamin Lavoie; Robin De Angelis of the Itty Bitty Beadery will create one-of-a-kind and customs handmade jewellery; and Kevin Beaulieu of Kev-Beau Contracting will offer services such as roofing, decks, siding, flooring, painting, trim and other home renovations.
Zack Pollock of Clean Cut Yardcare will provide grass cutting and trimming services, along with yard cleanups, weeding and flower beds; Jonathan Kpazai of Make It Last will convert older technologies such as VHS, Hi8 and V8 to DVD, as well as converting digital file types and creating movies and slideshows from photos and videos; and Julius Kenyamanyara of Green North Gardening Services will offer lawn and garden services.
