The City of Greater Sudbury cut a $75,000 cheque for an innovation and prosperity office at the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI).
CEMI will match that amount.
Peter Kaiser, president and CEO of CEMI, said the office will bring mining-specific benefits to the Greater Sudbury region.
"We'll use the money to find people that can help us to identify ideas to innovate," he said. "That means we are funding innovation hunters.β
By going outside of the community to find people with new and unique ideas, partnerships can be struck, which in turn will bring economic benefits to Sudbury, say proponents.
Scott Lund, chair and president of the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation, said his organization supports the start-up of the project.
βIt brings people to Sudbury with research and innovation, and that's very important,β he said.
