Work on municipal infrastructure for the City of Greater Sudbury has netted a pair of Ontario Public Works Association Project of the Year awards for R.V. Anderson Associates Limited.

Based out of Toronto and with offices in Sudbury, R.V. Anderson Associates won an award for "Structures, Greater than $10 Million" for its work on the city's South End Sewage Rock Tunnel Project.

The company planned, designed and oversaw construction of the project, a $31-million, 6.5-kilometre-long sewer system to increase capacity for the area. It was blasted through bedrock more than 25 metres below surface, and the company's approach allows the city to save $300,000 a year for 60 years, or $17 million.

R.V. Anderson Associates also won an award in the category of "Environment, Greater than $10 Million" for its work on the City of Greater Sudbury's Levack and Onaping Water Supply Project.

The work involved the optimization of the overall water supply system for the two titular communities. The result was $18.5 million in new infrastructure, including a new elevated water storage tank, anew pressure control facility and booster station, as well as a new groundwater well and expanded well facility. It also required 6.6 kilometres of new water mains, including two crossings of the Onaping River.

The company's delivery concept and overall design led to a schedule reduction of six to eight months, as well as construction cost savings of $200,000.
