Sudbury-based R.V. Anderson Associates Ltd. has won the Public Works Project of the Year Award in the environment category for its work on the sewage rock tunnel project in the city's south end.
Sponsored by the American Public Works Association, a not-for-profit international organization of more than 28,500 members involved in the field of public works, the award honours excellence in the management and administration of public works projects.
Sudbury's sewage rock tunnel project cost $31 million and saw a 6.5 km sewer tunnel system blasted through bedrock 25 m below the surface. R.V. Anderson planned, designed and oversaw the project, which was designed to add capacity to the city's sewer system and relieve basement flooding and sewage overflows into local water courses.
“We appreciate the industry's acknowledgement of our commitment to sustainable infrastructure development,” said Shawn Scott, the firm's Sudbury regional manager and vice-president, in a news release. Scott also acted as director for the project.
The project involved the decommissioning of six sewage pumping stations, following diversion of flow into the tunnel, which is projected to save $17 million over 60 years.
The project was additionally named the Ontario Public Works Association's 2010 Project of the Year.
