A labour force analysis in underway in the Sault Ste. Marie area by the Algoma Workforce Investment Committee.
The group is partnering with the Ministry of Colleges, Training and Universities, plus other community partners to come with a strategy for the surrounding District of Algoma.
Population has dropped in the area between 2001 and 2006, which sharply contrasts with the rest of Ontario. As well, there is an aging workforce.
A consulting firm, R. A. Malatest & Associates Ltd. will do research to help understanding the labour market issues and skill requirements of the area.
The goal of the study will be to gather information from statistical sources and from interviews from business, education, training and government representatives to develop a workforce development strategy.
