Stantec Mining has donated $50,000 to Cambrian College in Sudbury for use towards scholarships that will aid in the development of future mining technicians and technologists.
Mike Mayhew, director of global business services in mining and chair of Cambrian's Mining Program Advisory Committee, said the donation is part of the company's ongoing engagement with Cambrian College.
“Our company benefits from a strong relationship with the College since we hire many of its graduates, who become valuable employees,” he said in a news release. “To give back, our employees serve on program advisory committees; they also act as part-time instructors and as placement supervisors for students in the field. It creates a perfect circle in which our company contributes to education, and in turn, Cambrian graduates contribute to the company.”
Cambrian president Sylvia Barnard said the donation will contribute to the college's bursary program, which distributes more than $350,000 annually.
“Cambrian depends on strong industry partnerships to ensure that our programs are relevant, and our graduates have the skills needed to be successful in today’s global workplaces,” she said in the release. “We thank Stantec for its many contributions to the College, both financial and otherwise.”
At its spring convocation ceremonies, Cambrian College honoured Stantec with its Dr. Fred Sheridan Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to education and society as a whole.
