A solar panel manufacturer received $2.5 million from the province at its groundbreaking ceremony in Sault Ste. Marie.
Sault MPP David Orazietti made the announcement, May 7.
The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund is providing Heliene Canada with an $1.87 million loan and a $625,000 grant to build a solar module manufacturing plant that is expected to produce 87,500 solar panels that can generate 20 megawatts of power per year.
The company has local investors which includes former Algoma Steel CEO Denis Turcotte. Martin Pochtaruk, a former vice-president at Algoma, is Heliene Canada's president.
The company expects to operate on a three-cycle shift that could create as many as 12 jobs per shift for a total workforce of 36 employees.
