Residents in Blind River will have their own low-cost renewable energy supply.

The northeastern Ontario town received a $49.5-million loan from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) to build a solar farm in the northeastern Ontario town's industrial park, located halfway between Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury.

Kenora MP Greg Rickford made the announcement May 31, on behalf of federal Human Resources and Skills minister Diane Finley.

The money comes from CMHC's Municipal Infrastructure Lending Program. The Blind River project is the program's first project.

The project will mean the installation of 45,000 solar panels on 285 towers.

The solar farm will be spread out over 120 acres.

The municipally-owned project will be managed by North Shore Power Group.
