UPDATE: Former Vale executive Murilo Ferreira has been named CEO of the company.
Roger Agnelli has been ousted by Vale SA as its chief executive officer.
Some reports name Tito Martins, the Brazilian mining giant's Toronto-based metals executive director, as a leading candidate to take over the state-owned resource company.
As head of Vale's nickel operations in Canada, Martins has overseen a pair of strikes, including one in Sudbury that lasted a year and another 14-month work stoppage in Labrador.
The company will name Agnelli's successor later this week.
