Work has begun on the next stage of construction at Finlandia Village in Sudbury, with a $6.9-million infusion of funds to build 61 one- and two-bedroom units in a new supportive housing complex.

Funding comes from the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program, and the project is expected to create 190 construction jobs. The total cost of the project is $15.5 million, and the 82-unit building, to be called Lepokoti, is expected to be complete by December 2012.

The supportive living building will feature a common eating area, housekeeping services, and access to health-care professionals.

The sixth building in the Finlandia Village complex, located in the city's east end, is anticipated to alleviate the need for alternate level of care (ALC) beds at the Sudbury Regional Hospital.
