Essar Steel Algoma is adding 40 seats to its apprenticeship program in searching for new electrical maintenance technicians, crane repair technicians and brick layers.

Currently, the Sault Ste. Marie steel producer has 82 people enrolled in the company's apprenticeship program with nine trades at Sault College.

Plant president Armando Plastino said expanding the program helps “close the gap” in filing their current and future workforce needs.

The average employee age at Essar Steel is 47 years and the attrition rate is opening up new jobs for workers to advance internally.

The company is already on a hiring blitz for experienced workers having hired 35 trades people and is recruiting for 75 more trades and professionals.
