St. Patrick Elementary School in Sault Ste. Marie will undergo a major expansion this summer, after an announcement of $14.6 million in funding for the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board.

Construction is set to begin immediately, and is expected to create 36 jobs in the community.

In making the announcement on Monday, Sault Ste. Marie MPP David Orazietti said the funding will allow for upgrades to infrastructure and efficiencies in operations.

The new school will be named Holy Cross and allow for the consolidation of St. Hubert, Sister Mary Clare, St. Mark and St. Patrick schools. The expansion will feature four full-day learning classrooms, new music and science classrooms, and Aboriginal cultural spaces. Work will additionally be done to prepare the 61,000-square-foot space to house a daycare hub.

The school will open its doors to 600 students in September.
