Sault recognizes the best in tourism

Five individuals and businesses were recognized at the 8th annual Tourism Awards staged by Tourism Sault Ste. Marie, Oct. 28.

More than 150 tourism, business and political leaders attended the gala to watch the Tourism Award of Excellence being awarded to Patricia Rowswell, daughter of former mayor John Rowswell, who died Aug. 31. The award is presented to someone who has significantly impacted the development of tourism in the Sault area.

Voyageur Lodge and Cookhouse was the recipient of the Business of the Year Award while Mike Freamon of Algoma's Water Tower Inn and Suites took home the Customer Service Award.

Raimo Viitala, chairman of the 2010 Finn Grand Festival won the Tourism Ambassador Award. Nicole Walker, a second-year student in Sault College's Hospitality Management and Resort Program, won the Student Hospitality Award.
