PUC Telecom Inc. and Ontera have been jointly providing telecommunication services to Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma District since 2001. PUC Telecom provides the fibre-optic network within the City of Sault Ste. Marie, while Ontera provides connections to locations within the Algoma District as well as to Northern Ontario and Toronto.

Council has given approval for PUC Telecom to sell it’s assets to Ontera subject to the parties concluding a Purchase and Sale Agreement and authorize PUC Telecom to continue negotiations with Ontera.

Ontera has been providing telecommunications services in the North since its inception in 1974 and first became regulated by the Canadian Radio-television Commision (CRTC) in 1993. Over the last decade, Ontera has established fibre-optic networks between North Bay and Timmins and Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury, in addition to providing long-distance telephone and Internet services.
