The Ontario government is putting one of Sault Ste. Marie's landmark buildings, Roberta Bondar Place, up for sale.
It's part of the McGuinty government's Realty Transformation Strategy which includes selling off other provincial buildings across Ontario, including government buildings in Sudbury and Thunder Bay.
Whoever buys these properties will inherit government tenants. In a Jan. 15 news release from the Ministry of Infrastructure, the plan is to sell and lease back nine government buildings.
As part of its deficit-reduction plan, the government said the sale and leaseback should generate as much as $500 million in revenue and a savings of almost $300 million over the next 25 to 30 years.
With 265,000-square-feet of space, Bondar Place, built in 1991, is home to various ministries including Natural Resources, Northern Development and Mines, Transportation, and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.
