The City of Sault Ste. Marie is a finalist for a provincial conservation award that recognizes the promotion of energy conservation and sustainability.

The Sault is one of nine communities up for the Community Conservation Awards, a joint initiative of the Ontario Power Authority, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and the Electricity Distributors Association.

This new award acknowledges conservation leadership, innovation and market transformation, corporate/internal and community engagement, and conservation achievements/savings.

“The City of Sault Ste. Marie is very proud to be a community conservation awards finalist,” Councillor Steve Butland said in a news release. “It recognizes the hard work and local efforts helping maintain our community’s status as the Alternative Energy Capital of North America.”

In the category for communities with populations under 150,000, the Sault is nominated alongside Caledon and East Gwillimbury.

In the 150,000 to 500,000 population category, contenders are Burlington, Markham and Vaughan. For communities with a population of more than 500,000, nominees are Durham Region, Hamilton and Mississauga.

Winners from each category will be announced on Dec. 6 at the Local Authority Services Connections Energy Symposium in Toronto.
