Developing a new port facility in Sault Ste. Marie was one of the items discussed during a recent five-day visit by a City of Sault Ste. Marie delegation to India.

The delegation led by Mayor Debbie Amaroso was on invitation by the Ruia family, owners of the Essar Steel, the city's largest private employer.

The group toured Essar facilities in Mumbai, Jamnagar and Hazira including their head office, refinery, steel mill, ports, rail and loading centre.

The Ruia family are the owners of the Essar group of companies which includes steel, oil, gas, power and shipping.

A City of Sault Ste. Marie March 25 press release described a series of discussions with Essar officials as “very encouraging.”

The intent of the mission was to “explore synergies” that can be mutually developed between the community and Essar.

Discussions over expanding Essar's port facilities in the Sault to include movement of outside freight over their dock will continue with officials from Essar Steel and logistics, said the city.

The city said the delegation members “are excited about the outcomes of this mission” and will follow up immediately with Essar officials about potential opportunities for the Sault.
