FedNor is optimistic that funding awarded to Sault Ste. Marie to host a hockey tournament next spring will lead to a boost in tourism.
The Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation received $106,000 to help host the Canadian Adult Recreational Hockey Association World Cup, to be held in Sault Ste. Marie March 4-12, 2012.
More than 125 teams and 2,000 visitors from around the world are expected to alight on the city for the event. Visitors will be provided with tourism packages and encouraged to explore key attractions in the region during their stay.
“By investing in tourism development, FedNor is helping the city diversify its economy and
stimulate business and industrial growth,” Sault MP Bryan Hayes said in a news release. “Our government recognizes the importance of providing communities with the critical building blocks they need to establish links outside the region.”
Sault Ste. Marie will be the first city in Northern Ontario to host the event.
FedNor Minister Tony Clement said in the release that the funding agency's support will “strengthen the community's economic competitiveness by promoting the best of what Northern Ontario has to offer the world,” adding that the Sault will be poised to become a “premier sports tourism destination.”
