Sault Ste. Marie is developing a community alternative energy strategy which will encourage the development of smaller businesses seeking to advance technologies and commercial activities in the alternative energy sector.

The plan will build on the city's success over the last 10 years in attracting large alternative projects to the area and foster the development of small businesses in the sector, according to a news release.

Objectives of the strategy include identifying new opportunities for growing the alternative energy sector in Sault Ste. Marie that increase prosperity including job growth, investment attraction, and community participation in revenue/wealth generation; identifying local capacities and capabilities required to enable the community and its businesses to capitalize on opportunities in the alternative energy sector; and engaging the community through workshops and public forums to generate ideas and encourage input into the community alternative energy strategy.

Nick Parker of Parker Venture Management, an expert in clean technology development and investment, has been hired to assist in developing the strategy.

Partners include the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Sault College, the Sault Ste. Marie Public Utilities Commission, the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation and private sector representatives.

Dates will be announced for workshops and information sessions during which the public can offer its input on the strategy.
