Sault College has received $282,078 from the provincial government to boost enrolment in apprenticeship programs.

Of the funds, $255,583 will go to the college for programming, while $26,495 will go to the APR Welding Academy to upgrade course equipment. The money comes from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Apprenticeship Enhancement Fund.

“The funds made available to Sault College through the province’s Apprenticeship Enhancement program provide us with the opportunity to keep our laboratories and teaching materials up to date,” said Colin Kirkwood, dean of technology and the natural environment at Sault College, in a news release.

The funds will be used to support apprentice training in trades such as automotive technician, electrician, plumber, steamfitter, cook, hairstylist, heavy equipment technician, truck and coach technician and marine engine mechanic, he noted.

Sault MPP David Orazietti said the investment will allow more students to stay in the community for skills training, which will ultimately result in a stronger economy and the creation of high-quality jobs.
