A prominent Sault Ste. Marie businessman, along with his wife, will be honoured at the 2011 John R. Rhodes Scholarship Dinner.

Dentist Dr. Lou Lukenda and his wife Mae have actively served in the community for many years. Dr. Lukenda has been a member of several dental associations, and has held appointments with the Council of Regents Colleges of Ontario, the Sault Ste. Marie Board of Education, and the Algoma College Task Force.

Mrs. Lukenda has been an active volunteer in the twin Saults through many organizations and projects, including the Sault Ste. Marie Area Community Foundation in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

The couple has recently established the Dr. Lou and Mae Lukenda Charitable Foundation, and an award in their name established by Algoma University will support student athletes who may need assistance to complete their degree studies.

Created in 1979, the John R. Rhodes Scholarship is valued at $3,000 and offered to a student entering first year of university who has demonstrated academic achievement and community leadership while involved in political, social, or academic activities. The dinner will raise funds for the scholarship.
