Sault airport gets $1 million in expansion funds

Days after receiving $200,000 from the city to build a new airport hangar, the Sault Ste. Marie Airport got an additional $1 million from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. (NOHFC) for the project.

The funds, which comes from the NOHFC's Infrastructure and Community Development Program, will go towards the construction of a $3.3-million hangar that will allow J.D. Aero Technical Inc. to expand its operations, creating up to 14 new full-time jobs.

The hangar will measure 22,320 square feet and include a 39,600-square-foot apron. J.D. Aero, a privately owned Canadian company, currently occupies a 20,000-square-foot hangar at the airport, and specializes in aircraft maintenance, inspection and management services. Clients include Porter Airlines and Air Canada Jazz.

“The hangar extension allows us to continue operations and growth in Sault Ste. Marie, as well as providing the opportunity to secure a recent, long-term maintenance contract with a dash 8 operator,” Don McNabb, J.D. Aero's managing director, said in a news release. “The additional space will also allow us to venture further in the AMRO (aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul) market.”

Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation chair Jerry Dolcetti said the corporation continues to enhance airport services, noting that the new hangar will double the corporation's square footage to more than 40,000 square feet, “giving us a significant presence in the AMRO aviation service industry.”
