Renovation and reconstruction work has begun at the site of the future Laurentian School of Architecture in downtown Sudbury.
Cy Rheault Construction Ltd. of Timmins won the contract for the work, which has a value of $5,548,000. The work will employ 70 people, most of whom will be hired in Sudbury.
The CP freight shed will be renovated with new siding, roofing, insulation and mechanical systems, and the second floor of the CP telegraph building will be renovated for use as faculty offices.
The buildings will be equipped with up-to-date and efficient heating and cooling systems, and the exterior of the telegraph building will be restored through masonry cleaning and the installation of new windows, preserving the original design features.
Phase two of the construction of the architecture school is scheduled to begin later in 2013 with preparations for 65,000 square feet of new construction incorporating the two original buildings into the design.
