The Budd passenger cars that roll the rails in northeastern Ontario are being rebuilt.

VIA Rail Canada awarded at $12.6 million contract to Moncton's Industrial Rail Services for complete modernization of six of the self-propelled rail diesel cars.

The contract covers cars that operate between Sudbury and White River, and Victoria and Courtenay, B.C.

The cars will get new seating, improvements made for special needs passengers, fully-accessible washrooms, new LED lighting, new electricity, heating and ventilation, rebuilt diesel engines that meet environmental emission standards and new air brakes. The first of the six rebuilt cars will be delivered by April 2011 with the remainder completed by year's end.

The stainless steel cars were built in the 1950s by the Budd Company of Philadelphia. The improvements should add 15 to 20 years of service.
