Quadra FNX has restarted nickel ore mining at its McCreedy West operation in Sudbury, after Vale waived its right to the high-magnesium oxide nickel ore for a period of three years.

Quadra FNX has entered into negotiations for the sale of the ore, and mining has restarted to provide a bulk test sample.

The announcement comes after improved production at all the company's properties during the second quarter of 2011.

“Our production profile improved through the second quarter as optimization initiatives at our operations began to deliver positive results, and we expect this trend to continue in the second half of the year,” president and CEO Paul Blythe said in a news release.

The company produced a total of 55 million pounds of shipped payable copper in the second quarter of 2011 at its North American and Chilean operations, while total shipped payable nickel production was two million pounds.

Sudbury operations saw 19 million pounds of payable copper production, up from 15 million pounds in the first quarter of 2011. Production for total shipped payable precious metals in Sudbury was 20,000 ounces, which remains on par with the first quarter.

According to the release, “copper production at all three operations was above plan.”

The company's second-quarter financials will be issued on August 10, prior to market open.
