Detour Gold has been granted provincial approval for a 185-kilometre power transmission line to supply its Detour Lake gold project in northeastern Ontario.

Work begins in the new year. The contract for the power line was awarded to a joint venture headed by Peter Kiewit Infrastructure, headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. Included in the contract are First Nation-owned companies from Moose Cree, Taykwa Tagamou and Wahgoshig.

Kiewit will handle the construction management and execution of the contract while PowerTel Utilities of Sudbury is the transmission line subcontractor.

The power line will provide up to 120 megawatts of power at the future Detour Lake mine.

In a feasibility study released in May, Detour's open pit mine will have a 16-year life, producing 649,000 ounces of gold per year.
