A new provincial plan for forest tenure and pricing will be unveiled before industry stakeholders at an upcoming round of public meetings across the North.

The Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry said this proposed new approach can help "re-energize" Ontario's slumping forestry sector.

The proposed "framework" involves the introduction of new Local Forest Management Corporations (LFMCs) to manage Crown forests and oversee the competitive sale of Crown timber.

Sessions will be held across the North, starting May 18 in Thunder Bay and ending in North Bay, June 10.

In an April 30 statement, Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry, said the proposed new system will be flexible, transparent and responsive to changing conditions. "It would also be designed to increase business opportunities for new entrepreneurs and promote market competition for allocating and pricing Crown timber."

Minister of Natural Resources Linda Jeffrey said the province is moving toward "modernizing" the forest economy with a new approach to forest tenure and pricing.
