The Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute is receiving $6.4 million in provincial funding.

The money is coming from the Ontario government's Research Excellence Program which covers the operating costs of conducting advanced research, including salaries for researchers.

The institute is one of Canada's new research bodies that involves R & D partners such as Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Philips Healthcare and more recently Sentinelle Medical.

"The significant investment will continue to build on the knowledge-based sector in our community, providing further diversification of our economy and the jobs that come with," said Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Bill Mauro in a Feb. 26 news release.

"This investment is one of the largest ever awarded in northwestern Ontario for research," stated Keith Jobbit, board chairman of the institute. "It is a testament to how far the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute has come in its two short years of existence, and the credibility that we've established in the research world."
